When you’re towing a boat, the last thing you want is for something to go wrong with your trailer. The axle is one of the most important elements of your boat trailer. If you pick the incorrect axle, it can have a significant impact on how well your boat rides and performs, and it could lead to problems down the road (literally).
Boat trailer axles and suspension
When choosing a boat trailer axle, the first thing you need to consider is the weight of your boat. You’ll also need to think about the kind of suspension you want. Leaf springs, torsions, and air shocks are the most popular types of suspension. Leaf spring suspensions are the most common. They are reliable and straightforward. Torsion suspensions are less common, but they offer a smoother ride. Air suspensions are the least common type of boat trailer axle, but they offer the best ride quality.
Once you’ve considered the weight of your boat and the type of suspension you want, you’ll need to choose a size. Boat trailer axles come in various sizes, from 60 inches to 85+ inches. The width of your boat’s hull will determine the length you’ll require. At Owens we custom build the trailer for the boat and will select the exact size you need for your application. Axels are measured from the end of bracket to end of bracket.
Last but not least, you’ll need to select a material. Steel or aluminum are the most common materials used in boat trailer axles. Steel is more durable and robust, but it is also heavier. Aluminum is lighter and easier to work with, but it isn’t as strong as steel.
Factors to consider when selecting an axle
Another item to consider is the material used in the axle. Steel axles are solid and durable, but they’re also heavy. Aluminum axles are lighter, but they’re not as strong. Different sizes of boat trailer axles are available. The size you choose will be determined by the breadth of your boat’s hull.
Boat trailer axle maintenance tips
Maintaining your boat trailer axle is essential to keep it in good condition and prevent problems down the road:
- Check the bolts regularly to make sure they’re tight.
- Inspect the axle for any cracks or damage. If you find any, replace the axle immediately.
- Keep an eye on the bearings and grease them as needed.
You can keep your boat trailer axle in good working order for years by following these easy guidelines.
